Pre-Shipping Checklist for Army Recruits

Between your MEPS enlistment and your ship date, your body-composition status can change — and the standard you will answer to at Basic Combat Training is the active-duty one: the Waist-to-Height Ratio. Use this checklist to arrive at BCT already within the standard, with margin.

This is a planning aid, not an official Army resource. Your recruiter has the final word on what you need to do and when.

What to pack (body-composition specific)

  • A flexible, non-stretch measuring tape — you will re-measure yourself at BCT on your own schedule.
  • A printed copy of your MEPS screening record — your baseline height and weight.
  • Your recruiter’s contact information.

What not to do

  • Do not crash diet in the final week. Dehydration can make your waist read smaller for a day, then you rebound at BCT — and you arrive depleted for training.
  • Do not suck in during any measurement. The official protocol measures at a normal exhale; a held breath is a lie with a timestamp.
  • Do not wear heavy clothing to an assessment. Bulk at the tape level reads larger.

If you are outside the range at MEPS

Applicants whose weight falls outside the enlistment screening range may be measured for body fat using a circumference method authorized for accessions — a different standard from the active-duty ABCP. The process is explained on our MEPS standards page; your recruiter has the current table and the final word.

If you are above the threshold at BCT

You enter the ABCP process: a monitoring period with recorded re-measurements, possible enrollment, supplemental options, and an appeal route. It is a defined lifecycle — read it in advance in the ABCP process guide so nothing about it surprises you.

Grace periods and exemptions

Whether any post-accession grace period applies to new recruits is still being verified against the directive text — see the current status in our directive explainer rather than assuming one exists. Exemption categories (pregnancy, certain medical conditions, and others) are likewise being verified; confirm your situation with your recruiter or medical personnel.

The one-paragraph version

Measure honestly at the iliac crest, compute your ratio, set a target with margin at 0.52, recheck at two weeks out, and tell your recruiter immediately if you are above the line. Everything else on this page is detail; that sentence is the plan. Start with the WHtR calculator, or read the full picture in the pillar guide.
