ARCHIVE — REPLACED IN TWO STEPS. This multi-site tape method (AR 600-9 Appendix B, Figures B-1 and B-2) was replaced by the single-site tape in June 2024 (ALARACT 053/2024) and then by WHtR on July 7, 2026 (Army Directive 2026-13). Use the current WHtR calculator for the active standard.

Army Body Fat Calculator — Multi-Site Tape (Archive, Pre-June 2024)

From the publication of AR 600-9 until June 2024, the Army estimated body-fat percentage using circumference measurements at three sites: neck, abdomen (or waist for females), and hip (females only). The formulas are log10-based and appear in Figures B-1 and B-2 of AR 600-9 Appendix B.

This calculator is preserved for reference only. Soldiers with older ABCP records, appeals referencing historical assessments, and military historians may need to compute or interpret a pre-2024 multi-site result.

All measurements in inches. In the archived method, each site was the average of three measurements.

Informational estimate based on your inputs. Not an official ABCP determination. Refer to your unit ABCP counselor or recruiter for personal decisions. Your inputs never leave your browser.

Reminder: this method was replaced in June 2024, then by WHtR in July 2026. Informational only — not an official ABCP determination.

Formulas quoted verbatim from AR 600-9 Appendix B, Figures B-1 (male) and B-2 (female). All measurements in inches. Verify against the original regulation PDF before relying on output.

The formulas

Male: %BF = 86.010 × log10(abdomen − neck) − 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76
Female: %BF = 163.205 × log10(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 × log10(height) − 78.387

Formulas quoted verbatim from AR 600-9 Appendix B, Figures B-1 (male) and B-2 (female). All measurements in inches. Verify against the original regulation PDF before relying on output.

Worked examples (independently checked)

  • Male, 70 in height, 15 in neck, 36 in abdomen → %BF = 86.010 × log10(21) − 70.041 × log10(70) + 36.76 = 113.7241 − 129.2325 + 36.76 = 21.25%
  • Female, 65 in height, 13 in neck, 30 in waist, 40 in hip → %BF = 163.205 × log10(57) − 97.684 × log10(65) − 78.387 = 286.5676 − 177.0926 − 78.387 = 31.09%

Note: some circulated examples show 31.11% for the female case — that figure comes from rounding the intermediate logarithms before multiplying. Carried at full precision, the formula gives 31.09%, which is what this calculator computes.

Pass/fail was judged against the archived age-group maxima (male: 20% / 22% / 24% / 26%; female: 30% / 32% / 34% / 36% for the 17–20 / 21–27 / 28–39 / 40+ groups).
